Sports-Themed Bedroom Ideas (A Tomboy Room Makeover)
For Christmas, we gave our two daughters something they were overdue for: their own bedrooms, finally redone to feel like theirs. They’d had the same rooms since birth, and since both girls are sports-obsessed, a sports theme was a no-brainer. Here’s how each room came together — and the sports-themed bedroom ideas that actually worked, if you’re planning one of your own.
Build the room around her team
The easiest way into a sports-themed room isn’t a generic “sports” look — it’s her actual team. My oldest is hockey-obsessed, so hers was easy. We anchored the whole room with a Fathead decal of her favorite NHL team, the Detroit Red Wings.
Red can be tricky to live with in a bedroom — it’s a lot. So instead of going all-in, we paired it with her favorite color, blue. That one move kept the room feeling like a kid’s bedroom instead of a sports bar.
Keep it light if she’s not all-in
My youngest also plays hockey, but she’s really into softball right now — and she doesn’t have a ton of other fixed interests yet. So I kept the softball touches to a minimum. Kids’ obsessions change fast, and I didn’t want to redo the whole room in a year when she moves on to the next thing.
Instead, we left space for who she actually is: she loves art, music, and ice cream, so we worked those in around the edges and repurposed a few pieces from her big sister’s old room.
Give the medals a home
Sports kids collect stuff — medals, ribbons, the occasional trophy. Give it a spot. We used a round shelf to display the start of my youngest’s medal collection, and a corkboard or pegboard works just as well for ribbons and badges. It doubles as decor and as a little wall of “look what I did.”
Have fun with the art
This is where you can get creative. I found vintage hockey prints — old patent drawings of hockey gear — and hung them in simple black frames. They feel grown-up and cool instead of cartoonish, and you can find vintage patent prints for just about any sport. It’s an easy way to make the theme look intentional, not like a poster wall.
Leave room for the non-sport stuff
A bedroom shouldn’t only be about the sport. Both of my girls love to read, so we built each of them a reading nook that matched their own style. It keeps the room from becoming one-note and gives them a cozy spot that has nothing to do with competition.
