Kindness Bags
In a world where compassion is key, Kindness Bags serve as a tangible symbol of empathy and goodwill towards homeless individuals. Learn how assembling and distributing these simple yet impactful bags can have a profound effect on someone’s life.
Bags for the Homeless
Keep bags for the homeless in your car to offer immediate assistance to those in need. These bags can include essential items like non-perishable food, water bottles, socks, hygiene products, and first aid supplies. By having these bags ready, you can provide quick support to individuals experiencing homelessness in your community. Make sure to regularly check and restock these bags to ensure they are always ready for distribution. Your kindness can make a real difference in someone’s life, so keep those bags handy in your vehicle at all times.
Kindness Elves
This tradition started around Christmas time with my daughters. I will be the first to admit that I get a little carried away when it comes to Christmas time. The music, the magic, the festiveness, I love it all. Each weekend is packed with some holiday activity. However, it’s really important to us as parents that the Christmas season isn’t all about “me me me” for our kids.
During Christmas, we do the Kindness Elves. They are similar to the Elf on the Shelf. However, our Elves recommend ways to spread kindness. Last year, our Kindness Elves suggested doing something for homeless people. It was one of my favorite projects to do with our Big Nugget. San Diego County has a lot of homeless, and it seems like there is someone in need at every light or every parking lot.
Kindness Bags
We went to Target’s Dollar Spot and travel section to get some essential items for our kindness bags that a homeless person could use. We’ve also gone to the Dollar Store and have found some deals on Amazon that you could order and have the next day. Set a budget per bag and fill them up based on that. Sure, we could easily roll the window down and hand them some money, and occasionally I do, but these kindness bags provide something practical. It also provides an element of compassion that many on the street don’t get. I want my girls to see all people as human and worthy of empathy.
What to put in a blessing bag:
- Wet wipes
- Toothbrush
- A small bottle of water
- Granola bars
- Socks
- Mittens (even in San Diego, it gets chilly at night)
- Kleenex,
- Chapstick
- Sunscreen
- Bandaids
How about including small notebooks and pens to provide an avenue for self-expression or writing down essential information? Add non-perishable snacks like granola bars and fruit cups to ensure they have access to nourishment. Additionally, consider including a list of local resources such as shelters and food banks to assist them in finding further support. By incorporating these homeless bag ideas, you can make a difference and show kindness to those who need it most.
We use gallon zip lock bags and fill them with small items that a homeless person might need. Even as we were assembling them, Big Nugget wanted a pair of gloves for herself and to eat a granola bar. It was a great teaching moment and allowed me to explain again that other people needed these items more than she did then.
We put the kindness bags into my car and keep them until we see someone on the street corner or at a stoplight. It’s an easy way to provide some practical help. Most importantly, we teach her compassion for others and that giving is as fun as receiving. This Christmas season isn’t about just Santa lists and Christmas lights but spreading hope and love through acts of kindness.
Christmas Kindness Bags
One wonderful way to spread kindness during the holiday season is by creating homeless bags to keep in your car. These thoughtful bags, filled with essential items, can make a significant impact on the lives of those in need. Consider including warm socks, gloves, hats, and blankets in your homeless bags. Additionally, adding toiletries like toothbrushes, toothpaste, and soap can significantly improve their hygiene. For an extra touch of holiday cheer, you can even include Christmas lights in these bags, bringing a little brightness to their lives.
